Vergil Calahan, age 85, of Colony, Kansas, died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Windsor Place in Iola, Kansas. Vergil was born on September 22, 1923 in Oberlin, Kansas, the son of Arthur and Pearl (King) Calahan. He enlisted in the Army Air Force on November 3, 1942, and served with the 849th Squadron and the 490th Bomb Group for 35 missions in Europe. Vergil was discharged in September of 1945. Vergil was united in marriage to Grace Wilson on November 22, 1945 in Iola, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with three children. He was a member of the American Legion of Iola, and a former member of the Colony Lions Club. Vergil enjoyed working in the garden, but his greatest joy was his grandchildren. Vergil was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Calahan; and one grandson, Devin Mann. He is survived by his wife, Grace Calahan, of the home; one son, Bruce Calahan and wife Linda of Lebo, Kansas; two daughters, Gail Strickler of Colony, Kansas; Tracy Mann and husband Darren of Moran, Kansas; one brother, Rex Calahan and wife Tena of Iola, Kansas; one sister, Wanda Quick of Iola, Kansas; ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Colony, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Colony Cemetery with military honors provided by the United State Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning prior to the service time.
