Vernon "Slug" Ellis, age 70, died in the comfort of his home in La Cygne, Kansas on Monday, December 18, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born on January 13, 1947 in Escondido, California to Vernon and Kay (Singer) Ellis. Slug grew up around the Beagle and Greeley area where he helped his parents in their grocery store cutting meat. Slug graduated from Parker High School. After graduation, he served in the National Guard. Slug was a Pipe Fitter for many years, and was a member of Local 533 Pipe Fitters Union. He worked at BEHM and Taylor Forge Engineering before retiring from U.S. Engineering in 2006 after 29 years of service. Slug married his wife, Linda (Church), in 1983. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandpa. They built their forever home in the country near La Cygne, Kansas becoming the favorite gathering spot for family activities such as hunting, fishing, swimming in the pond, and trap shooting. Slug and Linda's favorite pastime included anything and everything to do with their grandchildren, which involved being outdoors, and going to all their ball games. He was always there for whatever they needed. Slug and Linda made numerous trips to Canada fishing. They enjoyed cutting and burning brush piles in the timber with their loving canine companions Katie and Coal. He is survived by his wife, Linda (La Cygne, Kansas); his sons, Ryan (Overland Park, Kansas); Nathan and Jill (Lenexa, Kansas); his daughter, Angie (Louisburg, Kansas); his grandchildren, Brandon, Austin, and Jenna Terry (Louisburg, Kansas); Taylor Ellis (Lenexa, Kansas), and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by parents, Vernon A. Ellis and Kay Ellis; his sister, Linda Harold; and grandson, Jaden Mathew Terry. A visitation service will be held at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 12:30pm-1:30pm.
