Vernon A. Bowman, age 90, of Emporia, Kansas, formerly of Garnett, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Stormont Vail, in Topeka, Kansas. He was born October 29, 1923, in Anderson County, the son of William and Bertha (Brummel) Bowman. Vernon was inducted into the United States Army on November 13, 1944 and discharged on August 23, 1946. He was stationed in Germany, under the direction of General Patton in the 3rd Army. After returning from the Army, he farmed in Anderson County, and then began working at the Greeley Co-op. Vernon began working at Sinclair Service Station in Garnett, and then transferred to the Salina location. He met and married Mary Nickelson on June 21, 1980 in Salina, Kansas. They made their home in Salina for five years, moving to Emporia to manage the station there. Upon closing the station in 1995, he went to work for Dillons Grocery Store in Emporia, retiring in January 2003. He was a member of the Emporia V.F.W. Post 1980, and the American Legion Ball-McColm Post #5. Vernon loved to hunt, fish, travel, play cards, and gardening. He also enjoyed dancing with Mary at the VFW on Saturday nights. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha Brummel; a grandson, Joseph Dyer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Bowman, of the home; son, Douglas Bowman and wife Cherie of Escondido, California; two step-daughters, Barbara Dyer and husband Mike of Pomona, Kansas; Connie Alcorn and husband Mike of Enid, Oklahoma; two sisters, Ora Lee Gish of Topeka, Kansas; and Wilma Jean McDonald and husband Hugh of Fargo, North Dakota; one granddaughter, Crystal Jones and husband Austin of Auburn, Kansas; one grandson, Corey Bowman and wife Mallory of Mineola, Texas; step grandchildren, Justin Dyer and wife Theresa of Pomona, Kansas; Jeremiah Alcorn; Michelle Alcorn, and Katy Alcorn, all of Enid, Oklahoma; one great granddaughter, Maylee Bowman; nieces and nephews; and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett; with burial to follow in the Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vernon Bowman Memorial Fund.
