Virgil Roberts

Virgil H. Roberts, 86, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Virgil was born February 21, 1924, at Baldwin, Kansas, the son of John Orson and Alma (Palmer) Roberts. He grew up at Garnett where he graduated from high school. On September 18, 1948, Virgil married Jean Stanley in Bentonville, Arkansas. They made their home in a number of communities following his sales career. They settled in Iola in 1955. Virgil retired as sales manager for Capper's Insurance in Topeka, Kansas, about 20 years ago. Virgil loved fishing, hunting, playing cards and was an avid gardener. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola and Masonic Lodge #38. SURVIVORS: His wife of 62 years: Jean Roberts of the home 3 Children: Vickie Tholen & husband, Jim of Iola, KS, Ron Roberts of Gardner, KS, and Linda Duvall & husband, Randy of Pomona, KS 9 Grandchildren: Christine, Tammy, Lisa, Kimberly, Zachary, Jeremey, Seth, Jessica and Bret 9 Great Grandchildren: Chloe, Emma, Grace, Travis, Madeleine, Joshua, Makayla, Eli and Austin He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Orson Roberts, and by two sisters, Beatrice Suloff and Nina Dixon. FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, Kansas. The Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate. VISITATION: An hour prior to the service at the church.
