Vivian M. Haynes

Vivian M. Haynes, age 95, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Anderson County Hospital in Garnett. She was born March 9, 1918, in Garnett, Kansas, the daughter of Ebenezer Slocum and Lu Dell (Swisher) Dart. Vivian was the eleventh child of thirteen children. Vivian started work at age 16 at Grennen Poultry where she cleaned chickens, and candled eggs; she also worked at Fawkes Feed and Henkle Produce, where she also candled eggs. Later, she baby-sat for school teachers, and sewed for many people of the community. Vivian married James Alfred "Brownie" Haynes on November 14, 1936 in Garnett, Kansas. This union was blessed with six children. Vivian quilted and made sure she had a quilt for every grandchild. She even made extra for future grandchildren. Tooth pillows were made for her grandchildren, great grandchildren and the children she baby-sat. She enjoyed crocheting doilies, tablecloths, and afghans. She just enjoyed doing things with her hands. You would often find her gardening and in the flower beds around her home. She enjoyed feeding the hummingbirds and watching the robins, especially the robin that returned to a nest on her front porch every year. Vivian's family was the most important thing in her life. She loved having family get-togethers, traveling with her sisters, and spur of the moment trips. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ebenezer and Lu Dell Dart; husband, James Haynes; daughter, Florence Louise Haynes; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Haynes; son-in-law, Roy Nickell; granddaughter, Denise (Haynes) Bose; and grandson, Rodney Nickell; two brothers and ten sisters. Vivian is survived by her son, Garland Haynes of Garnett, Kansas; four daughters, Sharon Croan and husband Roy of Spring Hill, Kansas; Shirley Katzer and husband Bob of Greeley, Kansas; Marilyn Nickell of Olathe, Kansas; Barbara Robinson and husband Bob of Great Bend, Kansas; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren with one on the way. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the funeral service in the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas.
