Wauneta B. Seibert, age 99 years and 363 days, of Iola, Kansas, passed away October 19, 2022, at Greystone, Iola, Kansas. Wauneta was born October 21, 1922, in Byron, Washington, to Dale Smith and Amanda (Dunnington) Smith.
Wauneta served her country from December 7, 1941, to September 2, 1945, in the United States Navy, Naval Intelligence, during WWII. The Naval Intelligence team with which she served successfully broke several codes during the war, including a Japanese code. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree in business law from American University, Washington, D.C.
Wauneta and John Seibert were married December 21, 1946, in Seattle, Washington. She and her husband owned and operated Palm Beach Auto Parts, West Palm Beach, Florida. Later, they moved to West Fork, Arkansas, and then to Iola in 1978.
Wauneta volunteered in the Iola School District from 1999 to 2008, four days per week, in the HOSTS Program, where she helped elementary students succeed. She was an accomplished and avid seamstress, and she liked knitting. She enjoyed raising a huge garden and canning produce from her garden. Wauneta was an active member of the Iola First Christian Church until her health prevented her from attending.
Wauneta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and one sister, Ada Barbarian.
Wauneta is survived by daughter, Kathleen (David) Haar, Maineville, Ohio; son, Charles (LeAnn) Seibert, Iola, Kansas; grandchildren, Brian (Anita) Haar, Melinda (Sean) Kirklin, Lee (Shannon) Seibert, Jonathan (Darcy) Seibert, Julie (Brent) Plegge; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A visitation to honor Wauneta's life will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 24, 2022, in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, in the chapel at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas.
