Waunita Elizabeth Porter, age 79, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2019, at Parkview Heights, Garnett, Kansas. Waunita was born on January 25, 1940, at Westphalia, Kansas. She was the eldest of eight children born to Edward and Gertrude (Tillman) Lutz. Waunita graduated from Westphalia High School in 1958, and received her AAS from Neosho County. In 1958 Waunita married Edward Platt, they were blessed with five children. They later divorced. Waunita worked at Mode O Day and then as a clerk in a few Ottawa department stores before going to work at the USD 290 Adult Education Center in Ottawa. Waunita was united in marriage to Larry Porter in October of 1987. After 33 years at the Adult Education Center, Waunita retired in 2005. She loved music, playing the organ at church, as well as playing guitar and keyboard with Larry at many area dances and Sr. Centers. Waunita was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Gertrude Lutz; three brothers and one sister, Jerry Lutz, Dorothy Hulett, Gary and Duane Lutz; three grandchildren, Kristopher Stockard, infant Matthew Platt, and Devin Tirone. She is survived by her beloved husband of thirty-one years, Larry Porter, of the home; three sons, Micheal Platt of Gardner, Kansas, Joe Platt and wife, Linda of Richmond, Kansas, and John Platt of Paola, Kansas; two daughters, Cathy Cooper and husband, Clarence of Paola, Kansas and Theresa Macy and husband, Darrell of Ottawa, Kansas; three step-daughters, Marie McHatton and husband, Dan of Billings, Montana, Lori Lloyd and husband, Alan of Burlington, Kansas, Karen Katzer and husband, Larry of Garnett, Kansas; two sisters, Mary Ann Platt of Richmond, Kansas and Susan Lutz of Pittsburg, Kansas; one brother, Larry Lutz and wife, Barbara of Moran, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for Waunita will be held at 10:30 AM, on Friday, June 21, 2019, at the First Christian Church, Garnett. The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, prior to the service at the church. Cremation will follow the service, a private family inurnment in the Princeton Cemetery will be held at a later date.
