William O. Coats

William Orland Coats, age 87, of Welda, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at Golden Heights, Garnett. He was born April 20, 1927, at Warrensburg, Missouri, the son of Edward Orland and Anna Irene Coats. Bill attended school at Warrensburg, Missouri, until he entered and served a term in the United States Navy in April 1945. At the end of the war, he served on the USS Copahee, after converting the airstrip on the ship to accommodate the return of the troops from overseas. Bill lived in Kansas City, Kansas for several years. In February 1970, he moved to Welda, Kansas and worked for Ulis Tucker Jr. for many years. In June of 2008, he moved to Golden Heights. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna Coats; two brothers, Edward Kirk Coats and Charles Everett Coats. He is survived by one daughter, Marie Lane Mason; one granddaughter, Autumn Lee Mason; niece, Linda Berry; several nieces and nephews; special family members, Ulis and Joy Tucker of Welda, Kansas; Theresa Heistand and husband Marvin of Topeka; Katrina Winters of Welda; Debbie Brewer of Garnett; Clark Tucker of Welda; John Tucker of Lawrence; and all their families. Graveside services will be Friday, August 8, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Welda Cemetery, Welda, Kansas. Memorial Contributions may be made to William Coats Memorial Fund.
