William Smith

William B. "Bill" Smith, 87, of Iola, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Bill was born November 5, 1921, in Iola, to Eugene B. and Ruth Ellen (Warden) Smith. He grew up in Iola. From July 1942 to December 1945, he served in the United States Army Air Corp. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater in the 306th Airdrome Squadron and worked as a radio operator and mechanic. On June 6, 1947, Bill married Norma Jeanne Snell in Iola. They have always made their home in Iola. SURVIVORS: Wife: Jeanne Smith - of the home 1 Daughter: Donna Orth & husband, Wayne of Humboldt, Kansas 1 Daughter-In-Law: Mary A. Smith of Iola, Kansas 2 Grandchildren: Scott Smith & wife, Maggie of Andover, KS, and Stasia Ohmie & husband, Brian of Ft. Worth, TX 2 Great Grandchildren: Nora & Brady Smith 4 Step-Grandchildren 6 Step-Great Grandchildren 3 Half-Brothers: Leonard and Jim Smith both of Iola, and Larry Smith of Vermont He was preceded in death by a son, David E. Smith, grandson, Jesstin Wayne Orth, twin brother, Robert E. Smith and step-brothers, Roe and Ben Spencer. VISITATION: 2:00 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola prior to leaving in procession for the cemetery. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Highland Cemetery in Iola, with military honors. The Rev. Gene McIntosh will officiate.
