Wilma Bennett Sloan, age 78, of Garnett, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 5, 2014 at the St. Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas. Wilma was born on August 23, 1936, at Harris, Kansas, the daughter of Ben T. and Viola Mae (Butler) Mathews. She grew up in the Anderson County area and graduated from Garnett High School. Wilma was united in marriage to Paul Bennett on May 8, 1955, in Garnett, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children. Paul preceded her in death on October 10, 2006. Wilma married Jay Sloan on November 14, 2009, in Kincaid, Kansas. She worked at United Telephone, now known as Sprint, for 35 years as a customer service specialist. Wilma was a member of the First Baptist Church, Anderson County Hospital Auxiliary, and the Kincaid Advancers Club. She enjoyed embroidery, reading, music, and especially traveling to Branson to take in a show. Wilma loved the outdoors and her country home with its wildlife, particularly all of the birds. She also loved to spring "surprises" on people. She kept busy with her plants and flowers and she enjoyed taking care of her miniature horse, Rhett, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Jay Sloan, of the home; one son, Jerry Bennett and wife Donna of Garnett, Kansas; two daughters, Paula Jo Walter and husband Danny of Manhattan, Kansas; Diana Bennett of Loveland, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; three step-children; eight step-grandchildren; and one sister, Charlotte Durst and husband Gene of Nickerson, Kansas.. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, October 10, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Garnett. Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, rural Garnett. The family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday evening at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 219 S. Oak, Garnett, Kansas.
